In Profile - Designers who make Art out of Light
MICHAEL SENN a globally renowned lighting designer & consultant, who has designed and illuminated some of the World wonders from the Pyramids of Giza to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Sri Lanka, He is Sri Lanka`s only Lighting Architect, Designer & Consultant who had a knack for lighting from his early days as a child, during his pastime he would be found playing with torch batteries coupled to several little bulbs or candles that he would use to illuminate his home front walk ways and garden foliage, this was a hobby, a past time and quite fun for him as a child, whereby he seemed to enjoy the illumination he created, which ultimately grew in him where he continued to tread on a career path that a very few would consider in becoming a professional architectural lighting designer.
Michael loved architecture, design and illumination, even though he studied hotel management and graduated as a certified hotelier he continued with his studies in architectural lighting designing at the the faculty of Architecture at the University of Alexandria, he mastered the subject of art and science and became obsessed with "Illumination, Light and Design" he continued on a journey, studying the art and science of light in depth which gained him a Masters in Architectural lighting design. In 2002 he entered the University of Aden to study pre historic architecture in Yemen, a country that featured the World's first hi rise buildings that were built of clay during the Arabian Felix, which still stands strong and recognized as one of UNESCO's World wonders, Michael was inspired by this and continued his studies in Light and design until he obtained his MA in Advanced lighting designing and took on his first project by illuminating UNESCO`s World Wonder in Yemen such as the OLD WALL OF SHIBAM, HISTORIC CITY OF SANA`A, HISTORIC MINARETS OF ZIBAD. This gave inspiration and Michael continued on his journey as an independent lighting architect, designer and consultant who traveled around the World.
Michael`s expertise and flair of professional illumination is undoubted, from illuminating World wonders such as the Pyramids of Egypt, to the Palmyra of Syria located in the Homs Governorate, of Syria, Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe in Sudan, to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Sri Lanka, like that Michael has a track record of planning, designing and illuminating not only World wonders but the World`s best Hotels & Resorts, Landscapes and Hardscapes, Villas and Residencies, High rise apartment buildings, Airports and Lounges, Casinos, Restaurants, Boutique Hotels, Mega Office Complexes, Hanging Gardens, Vertical Gardens, Water Falls to Dancing Fountains, Facade Illumination or even that simple walk way in parks.
As a legendary lighting designer he inspires the use of light, with his next focus being on the Basilica Church in the Vatican City, where he plans to professionally illuminate this World renown Church that millions worship and bring out the architectural aesthetics through the form of light and design .
Michael Senn is Sri Lanka`s only member representing the World governing body of professional lighting designers from the Association of Lighting Designers | ALD - UK, The Professional Lighting Designers Association - PLDA - Germany, International Assocaition of Lighting Designers (IALD-USA) he also holds professional membership at the British Institute of Interior Designers - BIID- United Kingdom, and the International Interior Design Association - IIDA-USA. Michael`s experience spans for over 24 years across Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. During his 24 year career, Michael has been an Independent Lighting Architect, Designer and Lighting Consultant, having worked on the board of many organizations in the field of Architectural lighting, and several international Hotel & Resorts companies as an Architectural lighting Designer and Consultant for brands such as the Waldorf Astoria, Hilton, Movenpick, Sheraton, Carlton, Beach House Collection, Marriott, Intercon, Le Meridian, etc, etc , Michael Senn is just one of the few professional architectural lighting designers in the South Asian region at present. His expertise and experience as an international independent lighting consultant and designer has gained him much recognition amongst many reputed Architects and Interior designers across the World.
His 24 years experience spanning across the Middle east, to Africa, Europe and Asia as an independent professional lighting architect, designer and consultant has seen many iconic buildings been illuminated, he changes darkness to light designed by himself.
Michael Senn is now based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, whilst working from his office in Sri Lanka he undertakes projects globally, specialized in designing outstanding lighting schemes for commercial and residential projects.
